Fix the virtual printer after a Bambu Studio update

Send worked, then Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer updated and now it won't connect or says storage is needed. How to get it back in five minutes.

Updating Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer puts back the slicer's own printer.cer file. That file is the list of printers the slicer trusts, and the update wipes the line that lets it trust Layers3D Queue. Nothing is wrong with your shop or your agent. The slicer just needs the certificate again.

What you'll see

  1. Connect failed or code=-1 when the slicer connects to Layers3D Queue.
  2. Storage needs to be inserted before send to printer when you press Send.
  3. A red line on the Virtual printer card in Shop setup › Slicing, naming the PC whose slicer keeps being turned away.

On a PC that runs the Layers3D agent

Agent 1.14.45 or later checks printer.cer every minute and puts the certificate back on its own. The card then says the agent put it back. Close the slicer fully and open it again, and Send works.

The same agent version also fixes the storage message. Newer Bambu Studio asks the printer about its storage in a new way, and older agents answered "no SD card". The agent updates itself, so just give it a few minutes. To check the version, open Agent and computer in Shop setup › Slicing.

If the card says the slicer was updated and no longer trusts the virtual printer, press Set up this PC on the card, click Yes when Windows asks, and restart the slicer.

On a PC without the agent

Most shops slice on one PC and run the agent on another. The agent can't reach the slicing PC's files, so put the certificate back by hand. It takes about five minutes with Notepad.

  1. Get the certificate. In Layers3D, go to Shop setup › Slicing, open the Virtual printer card, press Having trouble? Step-by-step fixes, then Download the certificate. It lands in your Downloads folder.
  2. Copy it. In Downloads, right-click layers3d-virtual-printer-ca.pem, choose Open with › Notepad. Press Ctrl+A, then Ctrl+C, and close Notepad.
  3. Open Notepad as administrator. Press Start, type Notepad, right-click it and choose Run as administrator, then click Yes. The title bar must say Administrator, or Windows won't let you save.
  4. Open the slicer's file. In Notepad, go to File › Open. At the bottom right, change Text Documents (*.txt) to All Files (*.*). Paste the path below into the File name box and press Open.
  5. Add the certificate at the end. Press Ctrl+End, then Enter, then Ctrl+V. Don't delete anything that's already there. Press Ctrl+S to save.
  6. Restart the slicer fully. Right-click its icon by the clock and choose Exit, or use End Task in Task Manager. Then open it again. It only reads printer.cer when it starts.

Bambu Studio: C:\Program Files\Bambu Studio\resources\cert\printer.cer

OrcaSlicer: C:\Program Files\OrcaSlicer\resources\cert\printer.cer

If you use both slicers, do steps 3 to 6 for each.

Not in Program Files? Bambu Studio can be installed somewhere else. Right-click your Bambu Studio shortcut and choose Open file location. If that opens another shortcut, do it once more. You end up in the folder with bambu-studio.exe. printer.cer is in its resources, then cert folder.
Don't double-click printer.cer in File Explorer. That opens Windows' certificate viewer, not the file. Close it with OK and don't press Install.

Still the storage message?

  1. Open Agent and computer in Shop setup › Slicing and check it says 1.14.45 or later. If not, press Update now.
  2. Close the slicer fully and open it again, so it reconnects to the updated agent.
  3. Waiting on the update? Put an SD card or USB stick in each of your real printers of the model the virtual printer acts as. The message then goes away too.

After every slicer update

Each new Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer version wipes printer.cer again. On an agent PC that's handled for you. On other PCs, repeat the Notepad steps after each update. The red line on the card tells you which PC needs it.
